Kerry interest in the Moonraker Rally
This Saturday sees the return of the popular Moonraker Forestry Rally, the second round of the 2025 Sligo Pallets Forest Rally Championship, and a few young Kerry drivers are ready for action.
The event has moved to Dungarvan in Waterford and will see crews tackle famous gravel stages that haven’t been used for rallying in over a decade.
The Kerry focus will be on the Junior 1000 class, which has a big entry of young drivers aged 14 to 17.
Three Kerry crews are in this class and will be looking to put in a good performance.
David Slattery and Ger Somers will be competing in their Hyundai i10 (car number 317). Also representing Kerry are Frank Wharton and Mossy Costello in a Toyota Aygo (car number 320), and newcomer Aidan O’Leary with John Falvey, also in a Toyota Aygo (car number 328).
These young drivers will face a tough challenge over the six special stages that make up the 64-kilometre route.
In the 2WD battle, it’s the Lada Riva VFTS of Shane McGirr and Denver Rafferty who are top seeds, last year’s champions will have a tight battle once more over the Waterford stages as they cross paths with longtime rivals Hugh McQuaid and Rathmore school teacher Declan Casey, that pair coming out on top by just 2.6 seconds on the first round of the season.

Adding to the Kerry interest is experienced co-driver Derry Long, who will be co-driving for Conor McCarthy in a Ford Fiesta Rally4.
The rally kicks off at 9:30 am on Saturday, with Dungarvan hosting the start, finish and service park.
