Athea Road Races public meeting

The South West Road Racing Club (SWRRC) held an open public meeting last Thursday to discuss plans for the revival of the Athea Road Races, scheduled for September.

The meeting, attended by 22 people, focused on addressing resident concerns and outlining logistical details for the event.

Senior club officials, including Eamonn Walshe, Louise Ahern, Gearóid Collins, and Mike Dalton, were present to answer questions and present the club’s plans. Key topics of discussion included road closures, traffic management, and property access.

“It was a quick meeting, and all very positive,” said Walshe. “There was just a few concerns that we are able to deal with, the consensus was that we have the backing of the residents.”

Parking and property concerns were also discussed. The club outlined plans for parking areas on Glen Road, Carraig Road, and potentially Listowel and Abbeyfeale roads. Walshe also addressed concerns from the Tidy Towns committee, guaranteeing protection for their rose beds and new fencing. The club committed to providing multiple contact numbers for residents during road closures’

Other points discussed included road resurfacing, insurance coverage for individuals on designated land, and the issuing of paddock passes to residents. The meeting concluded with the club outlining plans for track layout and pre-race preparations.
