South West Road Racing Club AGM focuses on Athea  return

By Sean Moriarty

The South West Road Racing Club held its Annual General Meeting on Sunday night, with the primary focus on ensuring the return of the Athea Road Races in 2025.

Club official Eamonn Walshe informed attendees that the circuit was expected to be examined by a Limerick County Council engineer this week to determine the necessary repairs.  Walsh also made a public call for volunteers to assist with the event.

A large crowd was in attendance, including Paul Power of the Road Racing Alliance of Ireland (RRAI).

Power addressed the gathering, explaining the RRAI’s decision to break away from Motorcycling Ireland.

He confirmed the Motorcycle Union of Ireland (Ulster Centre) also supported the move.  Power reported positive feedback, noting that all clubs within the Alliance were willing to collaborate to ensure successful events.

He explained that safety equipment would be shared among clubs to reduce costs, with some clubs in Northern Ireland offering assistance and equipment as well.

While dates were yet to be finalised, it was hoped that traditional dates could be maintained.

Faugheen 150 is provisionally scheduled for July 12/13, and Walderstown for July 19/20.

No official date was set for the Athea Road Races, but organisers were working to secure a suitable weekend.

Walshe stated that no official announcement from Motorcycling Ireland was expected before March 1.

He suggested that if other clubs remaining under MCI were unable to run their events, Athea could potentially utilise one of those dates.

Walshe added that marshal training would start as soon as possible, stating that the club required at least 24 flag marshals for Athea.

West Limerick TD Richard O’Donoghue attended the AGM and pledged his support to the event.

Club membership is expected to open this week at https://swroadracesathea.com/.
