New speed limits on rural roads come into effect on Friday – are you ready?
As of February 7 , 2025, speed limits on the rural local road network will be reduced as part of a government strategy that aims to bring down the number of fatalities and injuries caused by traffic collisions.
Default speed limits on rural local roads will decrease from 80km/h to 60km/h. The Speed Limit review is aligned to the Government Road Safety Strategy (GRSS) 2021 – 2030, “Our journey Towards Vision Zero” and Kerry’s Road Safety Action Plan.
The Local Road Network in Kerry was assessed in accordance with the published Guideline to determine if a Special Speed Limit was appropriate.
Kerry County Council Roads & Transportation engineering team completed an inventory and procured the required signage for the updated default speed limit on the Rural Local Road Network and are currently rolling out the new speed limit signs to replace existing ones to reflect the change.
Kerry County Council plan to have all signs updated in line with the revised speed limit implementation date and in addition have embarked on a local awareness campaign aligned with the national campaign.
