Motorcycle racer to host free motorsport psychology classes in Tralee

Ardfert-based motorcycle racer Stephen Walsh who is also a Senior Lecturer in Psychology at Manchester Metropolitan University, will host a series of free night classes in Tralee focused on the psychology of motorsport performance.
The classes, jointly organised by the Kerry Motor Club, will take place on January 13 and 20 at 8pm in The Rose Hotel. A third date may be added to the schedule depending on interest.
Dr Walsh, a respected academic and experienced motorcycle road racer, will share his expertise on a range of topics crucial for motorsport success.
These include Techniques to enhance concentration during high-speed decision-making, such as utilising cues, triggers, and pre-race rituals.
He will also speak about emotional control strategies for managing stress and anxiety, including breathing exercises and mindfulness techniques to maintain composure in high-pressure situations.
Building belief and determination will be another key point if the course and Walsh will explain the power of visualisation and mental rehearsal for race preparation, tailored to specific scenarios like navigating a rally course or executing challenging manoeuvres on a race circuit.
Other aspects of the course include social identity and team dynamics and he will explore how social identity influences individual and team performance within the He will also teach leadership skills and resilience within motorsport settings, including the ability to lead oneself and others effectively in high-pressure environments.
These classes are open to all who are interested in improving their mental performance in motorsport, whether they are motorcycle racers, drivers, co-drivers, or team members.
Dr Walsh said: “I am really looking forward to this. It will be fun.”
The classes are free of charge.
