John Hickey builds a “working man’s” Ford Escort Mk2 rally car for the two Kerry Rallies

Local rally enthusiast John Hickey has recently completed the construction of a new 1300cc Class 9 Ford Escort Mk2, specifically built  for the upcoming Kerry Winter Rally and Killarney Historic Rally.

Hickey, a seasoned competitor, expressed his excitement about the new car, highlighting its potential for success in the competitive Class 9 category.

He experssed his opinion that a Class 13 or 14 car can be more expensive than other classes, with an estimated daily running cost of €5,000.

He reckons he can run the Class 9 car for of €500 a day.

“It is a working man’s rally car,” he said.

The meticulously built Ford Escort Mk2 features a 1380cc BDA engine, producing approximately 150 horsepower.
