Creighton’s Grampian Heartbreak – look back on how the Motorsport Ireland Rally Academy members fared on round four of the British Rally Championship

Creighton’s Grampian Heartbreak

A tale of what could have been unfolded for William Creighton and Liam Regan at the Grampian Rally. The Motorsport Ireland Rally Academy duo were on course for a maiden British Rally Championship victory before two punctures dashed their hopes.

Despite the setback, the M-Sport Ford Fiesta Rally2 crew maintained their championship lead heading into the tarmac event, Rali Ceredigion later this month. Chris Ingram and Alex Kihurani claimed the rally win in a Toyota GR Yaris Rally2 – the first repeat victors this season.

Creighton’s blistering pace was evident from the start, setting the fastest time on the opening stage. However, punctures and a spin hampered their progress, dropping them to fifth overall. A late rival retirement elevated them to fourth, a disappointing outcome considering their initial speed.

“This event was a tale of what could have been, with us taking four stage wins,” said Creighton. “The two punctures we picked up meant that fourth place was our final finishing position.”

Fellow Irish crew Keith Cronin and Mikie Galvin secured third place, keeping their championship hopes alive.

“From the championship point of view, the way it’s going this year, everyone is taking points off everyone, so every podium is good for the championship,” said Cronin.

Cronin turns his attention to the Irish Tarmac Rally Championship, where he leads, with the Ulster Rally next on the agenda.

Junior Irish Crews

The Grampian Rally proved to be a challenging event for Junior Irish crews.

MacHugh and McBride and Darragh Mullen, both retired from the lead of the of the Junior category.

Grogan held his head and managed a second-place finish in the Junior BRC  category but also took his maiden Stellantis Cup victory to extend his lead in the one-make category.

“I am delighted to take our first Stellantis Cup win of the year this weekend in Scotland as well as P2in the  Junior BRC,” said Grogan.

“It was a very challenging event where we struggled to get into a rhythm. A shame to see Kyle and Ryan drop out but glad we were in a position to pick up the pieces.”

All three Irish crews will now focus on the Rali Ceredigion, where they will face stiff competition from the Junior FIA European Rally Championship field, including fellow Academy member Aoife Raftery.

“All focus now turns to preparing ourselves for that,” added Grogan.
