Kerry competitors holding their own during summer break

Organisers of several leading rally championships have published interim results during the sport’s summer break and as ever there is plenty of Kerry interest in all series.

In the Irish Tarmac Rally Championship, Killarney and District Motor Club’s Keith Cronin and Mikie Galvin’s lead has been slashed to just 1.5 points following their non-finish in Donegal.

They will have a chance to change that on the Ulster Rally in mid-August but first, the Ford Fiesta Rally2 crew will face the challenges of the Grampian Rally on August 10.

The August 10 event is the fourth round of the British Rally Championship where Cronin and Galvin hold third in that six-round series.  Their win on the Jim Clark Rally in Scotland in May could prove decisive in Cronin’s attempt to win the British title for a record equally fifth time.

Defending Irish Tarmac Rally Champions, Callum Devine and Noel O’Sullivan are third in the series, their victory in Donegal in June but their title defence is back on track after a difficult start to the year. Now armed with a Skoda Fabia Rally2, they will look forward to both the Ulster and Cork ‘20’ Rallies in an effort to overcome Cronin and second-placed driver Matt Edwards.

Local drivers Conor Murphy and Raymond O’Neill remain in strong class positions ahead of the final two rounds while Murphy’s co-driver Sean Collins is also in contention for a championship award.

In the Triton Showers-backed Motorsport Ireland National Rally Championship, Sean Og Scanlon and Paul McGlinchey lead the way in Class 2A in their Honda Civic. The same crew lead their class in the Top Part West Coast Championship too.

Gearoid O’Regan holds third in Class 3 in the National Championship and second in the West Coast in another Honda Civic.

Dave Slattery and Denis Coffey share fourth place in class 13 in their Ford Escort. They are both fourth in the Top Part-sponsored competition.

Kerry Motor Club’s Ollie Kierce is second in class ten in the West Coast and his co-driver Mikie Cleary holds third.

Also in the Top Part West Coast Championship, Paul Stryker and Edwin Walsh sit in third place in class 11R. Mike Quinn is fifth in class 14 but his co-driver  Kieran Doherty is in fourth place.

In the Top Part Junior West Coast Rally championship  Jamie O Rourke and Patrick Brislane are second in the championship standings.
