Randles to mark 20th anniversary of famous Carlow win
This weekend’s Carlow Rally has special meaning for two Kerry-based crews.

The fourth round of the Motorsport Ireland National Rally Championship is celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Ford Escort Challenge.
The category was added to the Carlow tow-based event to add a little spice to the rally but has grown to become one of the must-win events for drivers of the popular clubman car.
Killarney and District Motor Club chairman Thomas Randles won the inaugural event and on that occasion he was co-driven by Diarmuid Lynch.
On the recent Assess Ireland Rally of the Lakes Randles was co-driven by Diarmuid’s son Darrgah for the first time. Randles was driving the same car – the famous 88LK1000 – on the events that span two decades.
“To get the chance to compete on the Rally of the Lakes and on Moll’s Gap is a dream cone true,” said Darrgah at the finish ramp of his home rally on May 6.
“To compete in the car that was in our garage all the time I was growing up, is a beyond a dream and now to think that Carlow’s Escort challenge is is next is unbelievable.”
Colin O’Donoghue and Kiernan O’Donoghue won the modified category in Killarney and they now head to Carlow as one of the top seeds in the Escort Challenge Category. Another win there would be, also, the stuff of dreams for the Killarney and District Motor Club crew.
