Motorsport Ireland Rally Academy co-driver Eoin Treacy set for American Rally Championship debut

The Motorsport Ireland Rally Academy’s efforts to give academy co-drivers as much international rally experience as possible continue apace this weekend as Eoin Treacy is set to make his American Rally Association championship debut.

He will join Motorsport Ireland Rally Academy founder and patron John Coyne who is contesting the Oregon Trail Rally Presented by Wilsonville Subaru, his third appearance in the American Rally Association’s national rally championship this year.

Last month, driving a PCRS Rallysport-prepared Hyundai i20 N Rally2, the 73-year-old finished a strong fourth overall and won the RC2 class on the Olympus Rally, having finished eighth overall in the Rally of the 100 Acre Wood in March in the same car.

“I am really looking forward to this week’s Oregon Trail rally with Eoin. This was the first ARA National Championship event I competed in back in 2019, and I really like the stages there,” said California-based Coyne.

Treacy is competing in the FIA European Rally Championship this year alongside Jon Armstrong for M-Sport in a Ford Fiesta Rally2 supported by the Motorsport Ireland Rally Academy.

Their most recent result was seventh overall on Rally Islas Canarias earlier this month.

He will partner with Coyne for the Oregon Trail Rally and next month’s Southern Ohio Rally in the United States of America, having co-driven for John on WRC Rally Mexico and WRC Rally Finland last year.

“I’m very much looking forward to experiencing rallying in America, the stages in Oregon look super interesting. A massive thanks to John and the Motorsport Ireland Rally Academy for giving me this experience,” said the Cork-based co-driver.

On the home front Vodaphone Rally de Portugal heroes Josh McErlean and James Fulton will make a rare appearance at an Irish event.

They are entered in Saturday’s Tour of the Sperrins – McErlean’s home rally – in a Volkswagen Polo GTi  R5 and they are using the local event as a way of saying thank you to their loyal supporters in County Derry.

Craig Rahill and Conor Smith return to Irish rallying after their Rali  Terras d’Aboboreira adventure in Portugal last month.

The Ford Fiesta Rally4 crew are entered in Sunday’s Carlow Rally, the fourth round of the Triton Showers Motorsport Ireland National Rally Championship.
