Andrew Murphy set for Road Racing debut at this weekend’s Cookstown 100

Almost 20 years since he made his short circuit racing debut, Andrew Murphy looks set to make his road race debut this weekend at the Cemcor Cookstown 100 road races.

The 32-year-old electrician, who hails from Mountcollins, Co Limerick, first took to the track at Kirkistown in 2005, on board a 125 Aprillia machine.

The following year, his results showcased his talent, as he took the first of four national championship titles when he won the 125 Aprillia short circuit championships.

Andrew followed in the footsteps of his Dad, Martin, who also was a fairly successful competitor. Although it is almost 20 years since Andrew started racing, He missed out on quite a few years when he emigrated to Australia, before returning home again, and, of course, back to the bikes!

Over the years, Murphy has proved to be one to be reckoned with on the short circuits, when one looks at the list of his results, it certainly is a CV worth having!; 2006 Irish Aprilia 125 Champion • 2008 Irish Southern Centre Champion • 2009 Second in the Ulster Championship • 2009 Bridgestone Irish 600 Champion • 2017 Dunlop Masters Superbike Cup Champion • 2019 2nd in Dunlop Masters Supersport Pro Championship • 2020 3rd in Crown Prince of Kirkistown • 2021 2nd in Dunlop Masters Supersport Pro Championship • 2022 2nd in Dunlop Masters Moto 400 Championship!

Now at 32 years of age, Andrew has decided to change direction, whilst still aiming to compete at the Mondello Masters series in the 400cc class, where he was a winner last weekend, Andrew has decided to dip into the foray of competing between the hedges. “It’s something I’ve always planned to do, I have always wanted to give road racing a go but I was always too committed to racing the circuits. Now I think it’s time to dip my toe in the roads and see how I get on. The Cemcor Cookstown 100 will be my first build-up to my planned debut at the Manx Grand Prix in August.

Keep an eye out for Andrew, # 154 in the Junior Support and Lightweight Supersport events.
