BREAKING: Night Stage for the Rally of the Lakes – Moll’s Gap to be run under the cover of darkness

BREAKING: Night Stage for the Rally of the Lakes

Following the success of the recent West Cork Rally’s night stages and with overwhelming competitor support it has been decided to add a night stage to this year’s Rally of the Lakes.

Organisers have sought approval from  several quarters and are now in a position to confirm that Moll’s Gap will be run under the cover of darkness as the event’s opening stage.

In order to conform with the rally’s two-day format the night stage will run just after midnight on Saturday May 4.

It is all part of an overall plan to bring a Festival of Rallying to Killarney town centre on the weekend of the Rally of the Lakes.

The first competing cars  will leave Parc Ferme just after 11 pm on Friday night and make their way to the traditional ceremonial start in the town centre.

From there they will proceed on the short road section to Moll’s Gap with the first competing car due to enter the stage at one minute past midnight.

Once the stage is completed the cars will return to the Killarney parc ferme ahead of the usual start on Saturday morning.

While details are still yet to be confirmed it is understood that organisers had several reasons for trying this approach.

The move allows them to close Moll’s Gap on Friday eliminating potential spectator traffic issues on Saturday morning – the road would remain closed until after the running of the test later on the Saturday.

By running after midnight it negates the need to apply for a three-day permit and the additional insurance costs.
