Walsh confirmed second in Classic Bike Racing Ireland racing championship

Motorcycle racer Stephen Walsh said he was surprised to learn he finished second in the Classic Bike Racing Ireland World Series Short Circuit Championship last season.

Classic Bike Racing Ireland released the final results of its 2023 championships over the weekend.

Due to the ongoing insurance crisis that prevented any two-wheeled motorsport in the Republic of Ireland last year Ardfert-based Walsh contested the Ulster Superbike Championship instead.

Walsh, who races a historic-spec Honda 350, raced in Kirkistown and Bishopscourt in County Down last season.

He finished second to road racing legend Barry Davidson, the Ballymena rider scored his 100th road race win in 2024 making him the eighth most successful rider in Irish road racing history.

Both Davidson and Walsh prefer to ply their trade on closed road events but in the absence of all motorcycle sport down south, they took part in more Ulster short circuit events than usual last season.

“I was not expecting this,” said Walsh. “It was brilliant to finish second to Barry, Classic Bike Racing put out the results on Saturday night, I was not watching the results and the news on Saturday was a big surprise.”

Walsh also finished sixth in the club’s Road Racing championship thanks to results at the Cookstown 100 and the Armoy Race of Legends last summer – the only two national road races to run in Northern Ireland last year.
