Two Killarney-based youngsters set to join Junior 1000 rally series in 2024

Two of the youngest members of Killarney and District Motor Club are set to make their Junior 1000 Rally debuts at the Killarney Forestry Rally on February 18.

Frank Wharton, right, took delivery of his Toyota Aygo rally car form it’s previous owner Tommy Moffatt over the weekend.

Junior 1000 rallying is a controlled branch of the sport that allows drivers aged between 14 to 17 years to drive 1000cc rally cars in certain events.

Dave Slattery Junior, son of Moriarty’s Central Cars Sales Kingdom of Kerry Rally champion Dave Sr has acquired the ex-Mossie Costello Hyundai i10 and Frank Wharton, son of well-known local rally driver Cyril Wharton, has taken delivery of a Toyota Aygo in time for the local forestry rally.

Ger Somers will co-drive for Slattery Jr.

“Ger  started rallying with me in 1998 now he is going sitting with the young lad,” said his father Dave Sr.
