O’Connell targeting more podiums in 2024
Tralee motorcycle racer Robert O’Connell is targeting more top three Superbike results after taking his maiden podium this year.
O’Connell, a former Supersport 600cc class frontrunner at Mondello Park acquired an ex-Michael Dunlop Suzuki GSXR earlier this year.
Like all local motorcycle racers, his season plans were severely disrupted when Motorcycling Ireland failed to get insurance and the 2023 Dunlop Masters’ Superbike Championship did not go ahead.
Instead he contested selected rounds of the Ulster Superbike Championship on his new bike.
His best result came during the September meeting at Kirkistown where he took third place in a Superbike race – his first podium on a ‘big bike’.
“I started race one in fifth, , made a very bad start and was back to eighth after turn one but caught the pack and back up to fourth for a finish,” he said.

“In race tow I had a great start, and was running in second, just half a second behind the leader but on the last lap was passed so had to settle for third. I was really happy with my first Superbike podium and hope to build on that next season.”
O’Connell’s season is over, he will not place an entry for the Sunflower Trophy and is already looking forward to the traditional pre-season away test in Spain in March.
