Rain ends racing at Bishopscourt

Rain brought a premature end to the motorcycle racing season for two local racers.

Both Andrew Murphy and Stephen Walsh were at Bishopscourt, County Down on Saturday for the penultimate round of the Ulster Superbike Championship.

Walsh made his debut on the Production Twin class and steered his loaned Suzuki SV650 to ninth place in his opening race.

Murphy qualified second for his Lightweight Supersport race but shortly after his qualifying stint heavy rain descended on the circuit and no further racing took place.

It marked the end of the road for 2023 for both racers. Murphy’s appearance at the County Down track was a one-off and work commitments prevent Walsh from racing anymore this year.

“I got home from Bishopscourt a little earlier than expected,” said Murphy.

“The meeting was abandoned due to a big oil spill and heavy downpour so only got qualifying in which is a bit disappointing but what can you do? Qualified second and was shaping up to be a good race. That’s it for me for this year. Thanks to everyone who helped me this year. Hoping next year will be a lot better and we get some racing in the south.”

The final meeting of the year is the Hillsborough and District Motorcycle Club’s Sunflower Trophy races at the same venue on October 20 and 21.  The entry list for this event has not yet been published and it remains unclear if other Kerry riders will enter at this stage.
