Finland by the dozen – 12 Motorsport Ireland competition licence holders set for legen

Finland by the dozen

A total of 12 Motorsport Ireland competition licence holders are set to contest this weekend’s Secto Automotive Rally Finland.

Based in the city of Jyväskylä, Secto Automotive Rally Finland features three days of high-speed action on roller-coaster roads, it is the ninth round of the World Rally Championship.

And while 12 may not be a record, previous Wales Rally GB events and the two Rally Ireland WRC rallies will have had a greater number of Irish entrants, it remains an unprecedented number.

Irish competitors will be represented in most of the rally’s main categories.

Tyrone co-driver Aaron Johnston continues his partnership with Japanese driver Takamoto Katsuta in their Toyota Yaris Rally 1.

It was on this very event in 2021 that the pair first worked together and since then they have contested 24 World Rally Championship events and last year recorded two podium finishes (Safari Rally Kenya and Rally Japan) together.

It is very much a home rally for Katsuta, he lives in Jyväskylä, to be close to the Toyota Gazzo Racing World Rally Team’s headquarters.

“Finland is the home event of the year you could say even though we still go to Japan. This is the big one for everyone in the team with the factory for Toyota Gazoo racing being based in Finland so it’s an important weekend for the whole team.

“And especially for me and Taka being in the third car we will be looking to bring home a strong result with as many points as possible towards the manufacturers’ championship and a good result for ourselves.

“It is an event that we really enjoy and with Taka being living in Finland for the last five or six years he’s very familiar with these roads,” said Johnston.

“Hopefully  we can achieve a good result this weekend to repay everybody in the team for all the hard work that they do throughout the season.

“It’s also great to see so many MI licence holders compete in this event 12 in total and the other lad above looking down on us all.”

Motorsport Ireland Rally Academy crew Josh McErlean and James Fulton will make their second Rally Finland appearance driving a PCRS Rallysport-prepared Hyundai i20 Rally 2.

They made their Rally Finnish debut last season and will carry that experience into the 2023 rally.

“It is the one event at the start of the year that everyone looks forward to,” said McErlean.

“The stages are about 50 per cent the same as last year. That will make the recce easier.”

Rally Finland traditionally attracts a large group of travelling Irish fans given that it coincides with the August Bank Holiday weekend and this year is expected to be no different.

“The whole team Is looking forward to the event,” added the Kilrea-based driver. “There are always a lot of Irish flags out on the stages.”

A second car will be fielded by PCRS Rallysport and Motorsport Ireland for the Academy’s founder and patron John Coyne.

He will give Eoin Treacy his second WRC start. The Cork man, another member of the Rally Academy partnered Coyne in Mexico earlier this year.

“In March we finished 24th overall in WRC Rally Mexico. I enjoyed it so much I had to tick another WRC rally off my bucket list, so off we go to the legendary stages of WRC Rally Finland. Can’t wait for my first taste of this famous event,” said Coyne.

“Young Rally Academy co-driver, Eoin Treacy, did a great job on his first ever WRC rally in Mexico and I’m delighted to give him the opportunity to experience another event at World Championship level, this time in a PCRS run Hyundai i20N Rally2.”

Both crews had a pre-event test in the Keerru area of Finland on Sunday ahead of the rally’s recce on Tuesday morning.

Joining them in the WRC 2 category is fellow Rally Academy crew and Junior World Rally Championship contenders Eamonn Kelly and Conor Mohan.

They will get their second taste of Rally 2 machinery on the World stage – this time with the Red Grey Team as part of their prize for winning the Junior British title last season.

They previously drove the Rally Academy’s Hyundai i20 Rally 2 in Portugal.

“It is a fantastic prize, we know from Portugal what a challenge it is to drive these cars but to be able to do so on one of the most iconic rallies in the world is a boyhood dream,” said the Donegal man.

“There is no pressure, we are up against boys who know the terrain and the stages, we are just going to go and enjoy it.”

Privateers

Brendan Cumiskey and Martin Connolly are also on the entry list and will compete in a Ford Fiesta Rally 3 ensuring there is Irish representation in three of the four main categories in Rally Finland.

Cumiskey contested the recent Rally Estonia, finishing tenth in the class but Monaghan-based Connolly will be making his World Rally Championship debut in Finland.

New York-based Irish drivers Enda McCormack and Paul Rowley will compete in a Hyundai i20 N Rally2 and a Ford Fiesta Rally 2 respectively.

McCormack will have his son Liam, who is using an American licence, on the pacenotes, and both will be hoping to make it to the finish after retiring from the same event this time last year.

Rowley’s last appearance at a World Rally Championship event was last year’s Rally Portugal.

He has teamed up with Sligo-based co-driver Darragh Mullen and while the crew has contested several American rallies together this is Mullen’s first World Rally Championship outing.
