Concern over excessive speeding on road sections
Rally drivers are being warned that they face bans and fines of they are caught speeding on road sections.
On the two recent rounds of the Triton Showers National Rally championship at least two drivers have faced sanctions from Motorsport Ireland or the Gardai.
One driver received a 90-day ban from competition after being caught speeding in Cavan. In Waterford last weekend another driver received a monetary fine and was hit with a two-minute penalty after the Raven’s Rock Rally.
Donagh Kelly, chairman of the Motorsport Ireland Competitors commission has written to all members of the commission.
In the letter he said: “As members of the competitors commission, I am seeking your assistance and looking for you all to spread a message within your clubs in respect to the following.
- Driving standards between stages on rallies, there have been numerous incidents of late resulting in An Garda Siochana taking action with several drivers for excessive speeding, poor driving standards and for not wearing seatbelts. We must remind our community that we have to obey the rules of the road whilst traversing the public highway between stages. We cannot afford to have a spotlight on our sport for behaviours that are totally avoidable. – Competitors need reminding that licenses can and have been suspended for this offence. Can you please get this relayed at your next club meeting.
- J1000 – It has been noted that when codrivers assume the driving duties on road sections that once again they are failing to wear belts and bringing unwanted attention to this category.
As the saying goes , you have been warned
