Mossie Costello impresses at Moonraker Forestry Rally

Kerry Motor Club junior driver Mossie Costello made an impressive Rally 4 debut at Sunday’s Moonraker Forestry Rally in Ballvourney.

Driving his newly acquired left-hand drive Ford Fiesta at a rally event for the first time Costello was 19th overall and second in class.

The class was won by Galway’s Aoife Raftery who is currently plying her trade in the FIA European Rally Championship.

Both drivers used almost identical Ford Fiestas, the current weapon of choice for young aspirational drivers and considering it was his first time driving a left-hand-drive car on a live stage, and the same cars that are used in the Junior World Rally Championship, he turned a few heads.

He was co-driven by his sister Megan who made her gravel rally debut in Cork.

“It was a big day for the two of them,” said their father. Jason. “It was a big learning curve, he had to learn launch control, there are so many buttons on these cars you would need a degree in computer science to drive them. Megan was sitting very low in the car and she had to learn how to read the road from that position.”

The top all-Kerry crew in Ballyvourney was Mike O’Donoghue and Dan Murphy.  Driving a Mitsubishi Lancer E9, the Barraduff team finished tenth overall.

Moyvane’s Mikie O’Connor Jr was 13th at the wheel of his tried and tested Opel Manta. O’Connor won Class 13. Diarmuid Lynch and Maebh Griffin w
