Kerry interest in Laois Heartland on Sunday

A large Kerry contingent is set to contest the Laois Heartlands Rally on Sunday.

The second round of the Top Part West Coast Rally Championship has attracted such a strong Kerry entry, the starters list reads more like the Circuit of Kerry than an event in Midlands.

The top all-Kerry seeds are Dave Slattery and Denis Coffey in their Ford Escort and they will start at 16 One place behind is Mike Quinn and Kieran Doherty in another Escort.

 Kilflynn-based co-driver Denis O’Connell is on pacenote duty for Limerick’s Ed Synan and they are seeded at 20 in another Escort.

Cavan driver Peter Wilson will have Currow’s John McCarthy in the hot seat and they will start two places behind Synan and O’Connell.

Ray O’Neill and Jason O’Connor are the top seeds in class 12 and will carry the number 47 on the doors of their Escort.

Fresh their 13th place finish on the recent Limerick Rallysprint, Clare’s Christy Carey and Tralee’s Richard Talbot will compete in a Mitsubishi Lancer E9 and will start at 55.

Colm Browne, originally from Brosna, but now living in Cookstown, County Tyrone will compete in a Ford Escort G3 and will be co-driven by his locally-based brother Michael.

Ger O’Brien and John Liston are seeded at 80 in their Escort.

Headford co-driver Ger Somers will guide County Down’s Raymond Spence around the Laois lanes in yet another Escort and has been given 83 as their start number.

Sean Enright and Kevin Doherty are the 95th seeds for the 140-strong rally.

Offaly-based Ballyheigue teacher Gearoid O’Regan will start at 100 in a Honda Civic.

Five places behind, Katie Quinn, Mike’s daughter will also drive a Honda Civic. Amy Burke is the second Kerry woman on the entry list and she will start at 125 in her Ford Fiesta.

Declan O’Sullivan and Jonathan O’Shea compete in what is O’Shea’s third rally and O’Sullivan’s first outing this year.

Two Kerry drivers face an anxious wait this week as they have been placed on the reserve list.

Robert Counihan and Timmy Kelly are the seventh reserve in their Toyota Corolla while Donagh Crowley is two places behind on the waitlist.
