How to save a Honda Fireblade Superbike – spectacular photos
Emmet O’Grady showed just why he is a frontrunner in the Dunlop Masters Irish Superbike Championship.
During his third and final race at last weekend’s meeting at Mondello Park he was involved in a tight duel with namesake and rival Thomas O’Grady from Lusk, County Dublin.
Earlier in the meeting Tralee’s O’Grady took third place in the opening race while the Dubliner finished fourth.
They reversed positions in race two so the final race of the meeting meant only one thing – they needed to settle the contest for once and for all.
At the start of the last lap, the Dubliner held the tiniest of advantages but the Tralee man was not going to give up.
It was a shit or burst move, win it or bin it and Emmet, as only a brave motorcycle racer can, went for the gap.
It went spectacularly wrong and right in a split second.
His Honda Fireblade 1000RR’s front wheel went from under him – with the bike flat on Mondello’s hot asphalt, he never once left go of the handlebars.
Both man and machine landed, as a unit, in the gravel trap, and within another split second, he was up and away again, albeit in seventh and not fourth place.
Unfortunately, his effort went unrewarded. The stewards decided that he dismounted – even if these photos taken by David McLachlan present opposite evidence – and he was disqualified from the race results.
“I wasn’t letting go of her,” Emmett told Kerry Motorsport News.
Ten out of ten for effort.
