Former Irish National Rally Champion Luke McCarthy has been named as the chairman of the newly formed The Irish Rally Competitors Group.
The newly formed group says its aims are:
“We aim to make representation to Motorsport Ireland on your behalf. Currently, we believe, there are several items which pose a serious threat to the future of the sport, most of which, as competitors, we have had little or no input in.
“We can see that several motor clubs are attempting to address these items directly with MI and are attempting to voice our concerns but appear to be making little or no progress.
“Our aim is to bring the voice and opinion of the competitor directly into the debate by making direct representation to Motorsport Ireland on your behalf and by sharing your views directly with the club network.
“Our aim is to protect the future of the sport, drive better communication, seek transparency and assist with making the sport sustainable for all competitors at all levels into the future.”
The group is still in the process of being formally constitutionalised but apart for chair Luke McCarthy other committee members have not, so far, been announced.
The group will set itself up as a not-for-profit company limited by guarantee similar to most other motor clubs and sports clubs in the country.
It intends to apply for Motorsport Ireland recognition but given that it is Motorsport Ireland’s Motorsport Council that gives the final ok to such new clubs, it is very unlikely to gain such status.
However, the group claims to have over 700 members, following a series of online meetings and localised recruiting in recent weeks.
“We are all competitors who love this unique and wonderful sport. Each one of us knows just how much commitment it takes to get a car onto the start line of the first stage of any rally, whether it be car 1 or car 161. So, let us all act as one voice for the betterment of the sport,” said a letter issued by the group and seen by Kerry Motorsport News.
